Problem Note 18209: Status might hang with RUNNING DATA STEP / PROC in SAS® Enterprise Guide®
Some code might cause a Status of 'RUNNING DATA STEP' or 'RUNNING PROC
proc_name' and the process might appear to hang in SAS Enterprise Guide.
In most cases, the process will complete successfully; however, the
Status line shows a step is still running. Additionally, generated data
might not display in the project yet the data will be written to disk in
the appropriate library.
In some cases, the job will appear to hang and results will not be
generated in the project or written to disk. The top task in the Task
Status may show a status of 'Pending' while a subsequent task shows
'Running', but no process is actually executing.
In some cases a single task may hang. This has been known to occur with
the Characterize Data task when the table has a large number of columns.
For example, 250 columns might cause the task to hang on the last
procedure used by the task.
Until the cause for this problem is identified, the only workaround is
to open the log and scroll to the bottom to see if the last step is
complete. If it is, right-click on the item in the Task Status window
and choose End SAS. You will be able to continue working in your
project.
