Problem Note 10199: Enhanced Editor hangs, stops processing, and "General Error from the
user interface subsystem" error message appears
When you submit a very long line of code in the Enhanced Editor,
SAS hangs, stops processing, and the following error message appears:
ERROR: General error from the User Interface subsystem.
Because the line-length limit of the Enhanced Editor is 960 characters,
break the code into lines with fewer than 960 characters.
This misbehavior has been corrected in 9.1. When you submit code with
a line-length greater than 960 characters, the following message
appears:
Submitted code contains longer than 960 characters. SAS is unable to
process lines longer than 960 characters. Your submission has been
aborted.
NOTE: In order to get an accurate character count you need to make sure
tabs are expanded to spaces in the Enhanced Editor. To accomplish
this do the following in SAS:
1. Make the Enhanced Editor the active window.
2. Click on Tools->Options->Enhanced Editor.
3. Check the box beside 'Replace tabs with spaces on file open'.
4. Click OK to close the dialog box.
