Usage Note 10984: How to highlight columns of text in SAS Program Editor, Output, or
Log windows
To define a function key to mark columns of text in the Program
Editor, Output, or Log windows, follow these steps:
1. From the SAS menu bar, select Tools>Options>Preferences, click
on the Edit tab, and uncheck "Enable unmarking with navigation keys".
2. From the SAS menu bar, select Tools>Options>Keys.
3. In the Keys window, set up a key with the command: mark block;. In
SAS 8 only the single function keys are supported. In SAS 9 the
single function, alt-function and ctl-function keys are supported.
4. Use the key to which you assigned "mark block;" to mark the beginning
of the block.
5. Use the arrow key to move to down and to the right to highlight the
text.
6. From the SAS menu bar, select Edit>Copy or use Ctrl+C.
Note: Ctrl+M is automatically set up to mark text but it marks rows
not columns.
Alternately, you can use the ALT key and the left mouse button to mark
a block of text by doing the following:
1. Position the cursor at the upper left-hand corner of the area
you want to mark.
2. Hold down the ALT key, click on the left mouse button, and
drag the mouse until the desired area is highlighted.
3. Release the mouse button and ALT key.
Then, to copy or delete the area, right-click and choose copy or
cut.
Note: In SAS 9, the alternate method might highlight the entire line
instead of a block of text. This is fixed in a later release of SAS.
