Usage Note 1567: Unable to Open/Read Message File using the -MSG Paths
When starting the SAS System Version 8, you may receive the following
Unable to Open/Read Message File using the -MSG paths
You may have the following additional error message:
Error: Unable to Access Message 2.49
To circumvent the errors, verify the SASROOT is defined correctly in the
sasv8.cfg file. An example of the SASROOT definition in the sasv8.cfg
file is as follows:
-SET sasroot "c:\Program Files\SAS Institute\SAS\V8"
where "c:\Program Files\SAS Institute\SAS\V8" would be replaced with the
directory path of sas.exe on your local machine or your network (for
This error also occurs if you have installed SAS to the root of a
drive, such as d:\ or c:\. You cannot install SAS to the root of a
drive. You must uninstall SAS from the Add/Remove Programs window and
then reinstall to a sub-directory, such as d:\sasv8 or c:\sasv8.
The following message may be seen in the sasv8.cfg file:
ERROR: Setup was unable to self-register sas.exe.
This may be a problem with the print drivers on your system. Try
removing the current print driver or download the latest updates for
your print driver.
