Usage Note 24234: What determines whether rules (gridlines) appear in ODS PRINTER
output tables?
A table has internal rules if one of the following is true:
- The CELLSPACING= attribute is nonzero and the background of the table is
different from the background of the cells (this is called
the contrasting color rule).
- The RULES= attribute is set (for example, RULES=GROUPS).
This behavior differs from that of HTML browsers.
With HTML, if you set
BORDERWIDTH=0, you get no rules or borders, even
if the style specifies the RULES= or FRAME=
attribute.
But with ODS PRINTER, if you set RULES=, then you get borders,
even if you set BORDERWIDTH=0.
The BORDERWIDTH= attribute does override the contrasting-color
rule, however.
The contrasting-color rule might
seem a little odd at first,
but it is implemented for compatibility with the browsers. Because the
table background color is used to render the rules, it
effectively makes the table background "show through" between the cells.
