How to Submit a Paper
and Other Relevant Questions
This section will answer frequently asked questions regarding submitting to SAS Global Forum 2013.
- How to submit a paper?
-
Papers fall into three categories: Contributed Papers, Invited Papers, and SAS Papers. Contributed and Invited papers are submitted through the online Call for Papers system. Only someone who has received an Invited Submission code from a Section Chair can submit in the Invited Paper category. SAS employees may co-author a Contributed or Invited paper, but the submission must be done by the non-SAS author. For SAS Papers, a separate, internal Call for Papers will be issued at SAS.
-
- How (and when) are papers selected?
-
Conference leaders review and select papers. Each contributed submission, which should contain an abstract and a working draft, is judged on the quality of the idea and the writing. Leaders will make final decisions after receiving all submissions. The section chairs will notify authors by Jan. 14, 2013.
If your submission is accepted, the abstract is considered final and will be edited so trademarks will be properly acknowledged when your abstract is published in conference materials. The 2000 character abstract should include the SAS software mentioned in your presentation and any operating systems to which your paper is limited.
The working draft is not considered your final paper and will not be published. It should contain at least 1,000 words of actual text and should present the reader with a clear concept of your paper's focus, direction and quality. In lieu of a working draft, you may substitute a detailed outline.
-
- If I present a poster, do I need to write a paper associated with the poster as well?
-
No. An abstract and detailed outline are required to submit, but a final paper is not required with your poster.
-
- If my paper is selected, when is my final version due?
-
If accepted, the final PDF version of your paper will be due on or before Wednesday, March 14, 2013, for inclusion in the SAS Global Forum 2013 Proceedings. You will be required to submit a signed copyright grant.
-
- Are all papers automatically accepted?
-
No, the conference chair has final approval over all papers. The conference's success over the years has made the selection process more difficult. A well-developed working draft will assist the section chairs in identifying the papers and topics of interest to the attendees of SAS Global Forum 2013.
-
- What kinds of papers are appropriate?
-
Each section description explains in detail what the section chairs are anticipating. In general, papers describing real-world applications of SAS software are particularly appropriate submissions. Tips and techniques on effective or innovative uses that others can adapt are also well-received papers. Theoretical or general overview papers are also welcome.
-
- Can I give a paper about my consulting services or a product that I have developed?
-
A paper about your work is acceptable. However, the paper may not include price lists, support commitments, promotional information or other descriptions of a sales nature.
-
- How long can my paper be?
-
Contributed
The final version of your contributed paper should be no more than 10-12 publishable pages, including any charts, figures, source code and so on. You will have 20 minutes to present your paper. (The Quick Tips and Poster sections are exceptions due to the format. If interested in these sections, check with the appropriate section chair.)
Invited
If you have been invited to present a paper, the final version should be no more than 20 to 25 publishable pages. You will have 50 minutes to present your paper.
-
- If I submit a contributed paper and it is accepted, when will I receive confirmation of its acceptance?
-
Final decisions will be made after all submissions are received. The section chairs will notify authors by Jan. 14, 2013.
-
- Is my attendance required at the conference if my paper is accepted?
-
Yes, at least one author is required to attend and present at the conference.
-
- What if I have a question about the paper submission process?
-
You should contact Rick Mitchell, the Conference Chair.
-
- What if I have a specific question about one of the section descriptions, and what papers are applicable to that section?
-
You should contact the section chair(s) in charge of that section. Contact information for each section chair is available in the SAS Global Forum 2013 Conference section descriptions.
-

2013 Is the Year of the Poster!
We love posters and we’re not at all ashamed to admit it. They are wonderful mediums for quickly and clearly conveying various applications, capabilities and concepts involving SAS software.
In fact, at SAS Global Forum 2013, our goal is to receive at least 100 posters to display at this year’s conference.
But before you submit, here are a few things to consider when crafting your poster:
- Plan ahead. Time invested in research and organizing at the beginning will pay dividends later.
- Focus your scope. Don’t try to communicate too much information; minimize text and select content judiciously.
- Use visuals wisely. The imagery within your poster should help clearly convey your message, not add to the clutter.
- Be prepared to talk. Unlike papers, there are no formal presentations associated with posters. However, we do encourage you to be ready to answer questions from your peers.
Please note that all poster submissions require an accompanying abstract and detailed outline. If your poster is selected, a completed paper is not necessary.
