SAS/CONNECT software pioneered SAS' ability to use large-scale server power to deliver information across computing platforms to desktop/PC applications. This enables you to integrate your systems and deliver client/server applications across all enterprise platforms. As hardware evolves, SAS/CONNECT software continues to deliver enhanced capabilities that enable you to take advantage of the ever-increasing processing power that is available.
Version 8 of SAS/CONNECT software introduced MP CONNECT, which enables your SAS jobs to take advantage of SMP hardware as well as perform parallel processing across the remote hosts in your network. MP CONNECT allows you to perform disjoint units of work in parallel. You can coordinate all results into your original SAS session in order to reduce the total elapsed time necessary to execute a particular application.
In Release 8.2 the functionality has been expanded to allow you to direct the SAS log or SAS output from an asynchronous remote process to a specified file or purge them entirely. The KILLTASK statement has also been added to give you more control over the tasks that are running in parallel. There is also a SAS/CONNECT monitor window accessible from the SAS Explorer that you can use to monitor SAS/CONNECT tasks that are executing either synchronously or asynchronously in one or more remote SAS sessions.
In addition to the parallel processing capabilities, the compression that is done by SAS/CONNECT software has been enhanced. This enhancement benefits all types of large file transfers as well as output flowing over the connection as the result of an RSUBMIT statement.
