Independent Study Says Training Is Top IT Retention Strategy

A recent study designed by Robert Half Technology, a leading IT placement agency, revealed that training is the number one tool companies are using to retain IT talent. The poll was conducted by an independent research firm and surveyed nearly 1500 CIOs from a random sample of U.S. companies with 100 or more employees. When asked what steps they were taking to retain IT talent within their firms, 63 percent of CIOs surveyed responded that they were using training and career development. Training as a retention tool ranked higher than flexible schedules, bonuses and other monetary compensation.

The study confirms what software training providers like SAS have known for years -- training is as important to employers as it is to employees. "Studies such as this highlight the importance of training to the full business spectrum," says Vice President of Education Herbert Kirk. "Employees want and need ongoing technical training; their employers are providing it and reaping the benefits in improved performance and higher retention rates."
