Course Review with Daniel Bauer: Multilevel Modeling of Hierarchical and Longitudinal Data Using SAS

Periodically, SAS Training Report interviews a course developer to learn about the latest offerings from the SAS Education Division. In this issue, SAS Training Report speaks with Daniel Bauer , an assistant professor of quantitative psychology in the department of psychology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Bauer, along with colleague and co-writer Dr. Patrick Curran, authored the new Business Knowledge Series course, Multilevel Modeling of Hierarchical and Longitudinal Data Using SAS .

The course debuts in Washington D.C., in April and will be held again in New York City in May.

SAS Training Report:
Why did you and Dr. Curran decide to write a Business Knowledge Series course for SAS?

Daniel Bauer: The partnership with SAS just made sense. Before joining the SAS BKS program, I taught workshops on multilevel modeling at a variety of sites, including Yale University, the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center and as part of a summer program in data analysis hosted by York University in Toronto. Patrick and I use SAS extensively in our teaching and research, so we were excited about the possibility of instructing SAS users.

EDU
: Can you give us an idea of the value this course might provide potential students?

DB: Students will learn a variety of basic and advanced techniques for modeling multilevel data. Multilevel data often arises in organizational research (such as individuals within groups), medical research (such as patients within clinics) and longitudinal research (such as repeated measures within persons). This course will show students how to evaluate organizational effects, interactions between person and context, and individual differences in change over time. After taking the course, students will be able to identify complex and dynamic relations within multilevel data to inform a variety of decision-making needs.

EDU: Who should take the course?

DB: This course has practical value for researchers in psychology, education, social sciences and medicine, as well professionals conducting organizational or business research. Really, the course is appropriate for anyone with multilevel data, whether organizational or longitudinal.

EDU: What makes this course unique?

DB: The unique strength of this course is that it provides a comprehensive treatment of multilevel modeling for continuous and discrete outcomes using the MIXED, GLIMMIX and NLMIXED procedures. The primary benefit of this course is the simultaneous treatment of hierarchical and longitudinal data with continuous and discrete outcomes within the SAS data system.
