SAS® Statistics and Operations Research News SAS

Dear Reader,

I’m writing this copy on St. Patrick’s Day, so I wish you all the luck of the Irish. I’m hoping that your programs are all working and your data are behaving. Here in North Carolina, we didn’t see the snow this winter that other regions saw, but we had enough white stuff for me to regain my New Hampshire-bred shoveling form!

Anyway, spring is here, and so SAS® Global Forum must be around the corner. This newsletter issue provides a preview of some SAS Global Forum presentations at the upcoming conference in Seattle from April 11-14. In addition, I point out new information on the support.sas.com Web site that might be useful for you.

Enjoy the spring weather, and please say hello if you see me at SAS Global Forum!

Maura

P. S. All comments are welcome, particularly those about the types of information you want to see in future editions of this newsletter.

Online Information for SAS® Global Forum Attendees »
For your benefit (and ours!) we’ve included a SAS Global Forum resource page on the Statistics & Operations Research Web site. It provides a listing of times and places for presentations by the SAS Advanced Analytics staff, including the Super Demos in the Demo Area. We will also post other relevant information there. So, if you’re not sure of where to go next and you left your program in your hotel room, pull out your laptop and check out the link.

Let me know if this is helpful!
SAS TALKS Webinar Series Launch »
SAS TALKS is a Webinar series that features technical presentations by SAS experts. Now with its own Web site, this series provides live presentations for which you register, in addition to on-demand access to past presentations that have been recorded for your convenience. This is a great way to obtain in-depth information about our software. Available now are presentations about ODS Statistical Graphics by Bob Rodriguez, as well as presentations by Rick Wicklin about SAS/IML® Studio and Warren Kuhfeld about modifying ODS Statistical Graphics templates.
Technical Support’s Kathleen Kiernan Writes Article for Amstat News »
A few months ago, longtime SAS Statistical Support Analyst Kathleen Kiernan wrote a piece for Amstat News, the monthly magazine of the American Statistical Association, about her career at SAS. A Master of Science graduate of the statistics program at Kansas State University, Kiernan has supported SAS users for years in their use of procedures such as the GLM and MIXED procedures. She writes about her work life at SAS, including the process by which statistical problems are resolved. It’s a nice article; take a look!
Heads-Up on New Analytical Product Releases
We are putting the finishing touches on new SAS/STAT®, SAS/ETS® and SAS/OR® 9.22 releases. These will be coupled with the third maintenance release of SAS 9.2, which is scheduled to be available in the second quarter of this year. Stay tuned!
New SAS® Press Book About Customizing ODS Statistical Graphics »
Statistical R&D Developer Warren Kuhfeld has recently completed a SAS Press book titled Statistical Graphics in SAS: An Introduction to the Graph Template Language and the Statistical Graphics Procedures. This book provides an example-driven introduction to the Statistical Graphics (SG) procedures in SAS/GRAPH® software and an introduction to the Graph Template Language (GTL). Although you can automatically produce many, many graphs with statistical procedures using ODS Graphics, you might also want to produce your own graphs. The SG procedures and the GTL are the means to do that. Note that Warren will be giving a SAS Presents talk on this topic at the upcoming SAS Global Forum.
Updated Statistical SAS® Users Group International and SAS® Global Forum Papers »
SAS conference proceedings are a rich source of information about the features of the statistical procedures; they also provide interesting applications, including those by SAS staff. With new software releases, some of the material becomes outdated. We’ve recently embarked on a project to update older conference papers that would still supply useful information about methodology and software by bringing them up-to-date with more recent software features. These papers are marked “Revised” in the title, and you can find them in the Resources (Papers) section of the Statistics & Operations Research Focus Area. Recently revised papers include one about ODS Statistical Graphics.
Choosing Regression Models from Thousands of Effects with the GLMSELECT Procedure »
How can you select a regression model when you have tens of thousands of effects? This paper explores applications of the GLMSELECT procedure in SAS/STAT software to such problems. PROC GLMSELECT provides a variety of model selection methods for general linear models. It includes built-in facilities for handling validation and test data, and it provides techniques for extending the procedure’s functionality to address model selection bias by using bootstrap-based model averaging. Examples of megamodels that arise in genomic data analysis and nonparametric modeling are discussed.
Statistical Examples at a Glance »
Our support.sas.com Web site includes so much information that sometimes it’s hard to find it all. This page, in the Statistics & Operations Research Focus Area, provides a listing of examples by subject area and procedure for the SAS/ETS, SAS/IML, SAS/OR, SAS/QC® and SAS/STAT products. Want to see examples of the MCMC procedure in action? Just click SAS/STAT Software, and then click Bayesian Analysis. You’ll see links to all the PROC MCMC examples that are included in the SAS/STAT User’s Guide. In addition, you’ll see links to PDF and HTML formats for additional examples we’ve written for the Focus Area.
SAS/STAT® Procedures A-Z »
SAS/STAT 9.2 contains 72 procedures. Sometimes it’s hard to know which one does what, especially if you are a newcomer to SAS software. This page provides a short description of what each SAS/STAT procedure does. The navigation on the right side lists the statistical areas covered by SAS/STAT; click an area and find out what we cover and with which procedures.
SAS® Analytics Training Available »
A variety of SAS training is available through SAS Education, including a growing number of courses that are available over the Web. New SAS users might find these a valuable resource.
Tech Support Points Out
How do I adjust for oversampling the event level in a binary logistic model? »
The question of oversampling (retrospective sampling) frequently comes up in conversations with technical support. This usage note describes how to make adjustments in the LOGISTIC procedure, and the included program shows how you can use the SGPLOT procedure and the Graph Template Language to create graphs that compare the predicted probabilities that come from the various models.
