NEW! The Little SAS® Book, Fifth Edition
Dear Reader,
I was delighted to find this quotation from author Jane Austen, as it so aptly describes the past few weeks in Cary, North Carolina. "What dreadful hot weather we have! It keeps me in a continual state of inelegance." Fortunately for our staff (but apparently not for Jane), we've been able to maintain a comfortable air-conditioned existence while completing lots of hot new projects.
These major projects include the publication of three much-anticipated new books: The Little SAS® Book, Fifth Edition; Categorical Data Analysis Using SAS
®, Third Edition; and Applied Data Mining for Forecasting Using SAS®
. You can read more about these new titles in this month's newsletter.
Other highlights include:
- our very first interactive catalog
- new video components as part of our documentation
- the always popular SAS tips
- an opportunity for writers knowledgeable about power and sample size
Whether you're currently working or on vacation, keep in mind these words from author Sam Keen as summer starts to draw to a close: "Deep summer is when laziness finds respectability." Have a great month!
See you in September,
Shelly Goodin

Share Your Power and Sample Size Knowledge
By Shelley Sessoms
Power and sample size analysis optimizes the resource usage and design of a study, improving chances of conclusive results with maximum efficiency. The standard statistical testing paradigm implicitly assumes that Type I errors (mistakenly concluding significance when there is no true effect) are more costly than Type II errors (missing a truly significant result). Power and sample size analysis can help achieve your desired balance between Type I and Type II errors. With optimal designs and sample sizes, you can improve your chances of detecting effects that might otherwise have been ignored, save money and time, and perhaps minimize risks to subjects.
If you work with power and sample size on a regular basis and have examples and best practices that you can share with other SAS users, it's time to consider writing a book. Books need not be lengthy; a small book (less than 100 pages) would work well for this topic. If you'd like to talk about your ideas, pleases contact me today.
